Superstorm Sandy: Point Lookout Before and After

When I look at the beach, I can feel what’s been lost, but I need to see the before and after for myself, so here goes, as best I can get.

I have to say-overall, we are very lucky here in Point Lookout. Yes some of our neighbors were hit hard and lost a lot-maybe most everything. Our hearts go out to them.   At least our town itself isn’t crippled like elsewhere with garbage, house rip-outs and floated dead cars literally blocking the street.

For me, the thing that keeps hitting home is- we were spared the ocean coming into town. Why is this relevant?
1- The town is graded to drain rainwater (and anything else) to the bay, meaning the high point is at the ocean. Any break through would wash the entire town over-with wave action we did not have from the bay.
2- This was due partially to the dunes keeping the ocean back.
3- The dunes are mostly gone. As anyone who has ever built a sandcastle knows, you can pile sand all you want, that alone does not make a dune. It must have some understructure, years of rain packing it down and vegetation to hold it all together.

I heard today the town has started pumping sand back in and will be following up with pictures if I can find it.

A friend shared this mesmerizing video taken of the Long Beach Boardwalk during Sandy:

That video is coincidentally the same exact area of boardwalk pictured in our post “Point Lookout and Hurricane Sandy Week 2”
